Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles general medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs lie inside these institutions. After getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Doctors have gained extensive medical education with a stress on conditions concerning the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to handle conditions extending from standard disorders for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more puzzling like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical training which supply them the experience necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those issues that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait problems makes it easy for a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and avoid many conditions which the feet commonly encounter.
