Medical professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie provide services for the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend an average of a decade in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs lie within these institutions. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained comprehensive health care instruction with a concentration on difficulties involving the ankles and feet. They are taught to manage issues extending from regular afflictions such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more complicated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical instruction which provide them the practical experience needed to conduct surgical treatment on those concerns that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can offer pain relief and avoid many issues which the feet commonly encounter.
