Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in around ten years in learning, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and actually many podiatry programs are located inside these schools. Upon securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received comprehensive healthcare education with an emphasis on difficulties regarding the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to deal with problems varying from normal ailments such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more intricate such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical training which furnish them the expertise necessary to perform surgery on those complications that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait irregularities facilitates a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and minimize the risk of many issues which the feet routinely encounter.
