Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend approximately 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to standard medical school and in fact a number of podiatry training programs lie inside these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive healthcare training with an emphasis on difficulties pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are qualified to address problems extending from normal problems such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical education which provide them the experience necessary to perform surgery on those concerns that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Comprehending biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and help prevent many problems which the feet regularly encounter.
