Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists devote about ten years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located within these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 to 3 years.

At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received significant medical training with an importance on difficulties involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to deal with problems ranging from regular conditions like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical instruction which give them the practical experience necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are best managed through surgical intervention.

Foot Institute Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait peculiarities facilitates a Podiatrist to develop footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and protect against a large number of conditions which the feet frequently encounter.
