Dr.’s at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They invest approximately a decade in education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to standard medical school and in fact a number of podiatry training programs lie within these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have acquired extensive medical training with a focus on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are qualified to treat conditions varying from typical problems for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical training which give them the expertise required to carry out surgery on those problems that are ideally handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations facilitates a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and defend against numerous problems which the feet frequently experience.
