Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They devote approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and as a matter of fact a number of podiatry programs are located inside these schools. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained wide-ranging health care training with a focus on difficulties concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are educated to treat issues ranging from typical ailments for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have considerable surgical education which supply them the expertise required to perform surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against many complications which the feet usually encounter.
