Dr.’s at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They put in about a decade in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles typical medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are contained within these schools. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have gained extensive medical education with a main focus on problems concerning the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to handle conditions extending from commonplace problems for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical instruction which give them the experience required to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors additionally have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of troubles which the feet typically encounter.
