Physicians at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie provide services for the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend about 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles regular medical school and actually several podiatry programs are located inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received comprehensive health care instruction with an emphasis on concerns involving the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to deal with difficulties ranging from general afflictions for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more complex for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical education which give them the prior experience essential to perform surgery on those problems that are best managed through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to develop footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and protect against a large number of problems which the feet routinely encounter.
