Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They spend about a decade in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in point of fact many podiatry programs are located inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Doctors have received encompassing medical education with a concentration on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to address issues stretching from regular ailments like fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical training which provide them the practical experience required to execute surgery on those conditions that are best remedied through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of many problems which the feet frequently experience.
