Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Doctors spend about 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to regular medical school and several podiatry programmes lie within these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received extensive health care education with a stress on conditions involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are taught to deal with issues ranging from general conditions such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more complex including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have thorough surgical education which provide them the skill required to carry out surgery on those conditions that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities empowers a Podiatric physician to create shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and protect against countless complications which the feet normally encounter.
