Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists invest about 10 years in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to traditional medical school and in fact several podiatry programs are located inside these academic institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have gained wide-ranging medical training with an attention to on difficulties pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are studied to treat problems ranging from usual disorders like fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more puzzling like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical education which give them the skill vital to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute likewise have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and minimize the risk of many issues which the feet normally encounter.
