Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in approximately ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are contained within these institutions. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have acquired wide-ranging healthcare training with an emphasis on problems involving the feet and ankles. They are trained to handle conditions varying from basic ailments for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are a lot more complex like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical training which furnish them the practical experience required to conduct surgery on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Foot doctor to develop shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and help prevent numerous troubles which the feet usually encounter.
