Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie provide services for the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend approximately 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are contained within these academic institutions. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired extensive healthcare instruction with a focus on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are trained to care for problems ranging from simple conditions such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are far more complicated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical training which furnish them the prior experience required to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatric doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and protect against a large number of problems which the feet usually experience.
