Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists put in approximately ten years in education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and quite a number podiatry programs are located inside these academic institutions. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received considerable health care training with an emphasis on complications concerning the feet and ankles. They are trained to treat difficulties ranging from conventional disorders like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical training which provide them the expertise needed to perform surgical treatment on those conditions that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities makes it possible for a Foot doctor to develop shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and reduce the chances of a large number of conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
