Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend an average of 10 years in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are located inside these academic institutions. Upon acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received extensive healthcare instruction with a main focus on difficulties involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are educated to care for problems extending from normal conditions for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more intricate for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical training which furnish them the experience needed to carry out surgery on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations enables a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and defend against numerous complications which the feet routinely encounter.
