Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend an average of 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles regular medical school and in reality various podiatry programmes are contained inside these schools. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received comprehensive health care training with an emphasis on problems involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are studied to treat conditions ranging from commonplace disorders like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more perplexing including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical training which give them the expertise necessary to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best remedied through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it easy for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against a large number of troubles which the feet routinely encounter.
