Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to traditional medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have received thorough health care training with an importance on complications involving the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are instructed to deal with issues ranging from simple ailments for instance fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical instruction which furnish them the practical experience necessary to execute surgery on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait problems enables a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and defend against a large number of complications which the feet usually encounter.
