Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors devote approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to usual medical school and many podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have gained extensive medical education with a concentration on issues involving the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to treat issues ranging from regular problems such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more complex like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which provide them the experience needed to execute surgical treatment on those problems that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations facilitates a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against numerous complications which the feet commonly encounter.
