Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors invest approximately a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to regular medical school and as a matter of fact various podiatry training programs lie within these academic institutions. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained comprehensive medical training with an emphasis on problems regarding the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are studied to manage difficulties ranging from simple disorders like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more complex for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical training which provide them the experience necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations empowers a Podiatric physician to develop footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and help prevent many conditions which the feet normally encounter.
