Specialists at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors invest approximately ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to regular medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired considerable health care education with a concentration on problems regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are instructed to handle problems extending from standard problems such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more sophisticated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical instruction which provide them the experience required to perform surgical treatment on those troubles that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities facilitates a Podiatric physician to create shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and prevent numerous conditions which the feet routinely experience.
