Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programmes are located within these institutions. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained substantial healthcare education with a focus on issues concerning the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to manage issues varying from simple conditions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more challenging for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical education which give them the experience required to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities empowers a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against many complications which the feet generally encounter.
