They devote an average of a decade in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact various podiatry programs are located inside these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.

Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and protect against a large number of troubles which the feet frequently experience.
