Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend an average of 10 years in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles conventional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located within these schools. Upon securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received comprehensive health care training with a main focus on complications involving the ankles and feet. They are trained to treat difficulties ranging from basic problems for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more intricate for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical instruction which provide them the prior experience essential to carry out surgery on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait irregularities facilitates a Foot doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and help prevent many problems which the feet generally encounter.
