Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They invest an average of 10 years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and many podiatry programmes are located within these schools. Upon securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained comprehensive healthcare instruction with a main focus on issues concerning the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to deal with issues ranging from normal problems for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more intricate for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical education which give them the experience needed to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and help prevent many complications which the feet regularly experience.
