Dr.’s at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists spend around a decade in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and several podiatry programmes lie inside these schools. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received extensive medical training with an importance on issues pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are educated to treat issues ranging from simple ailments like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which give them the prior experience required to execute surgery on those problems that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait irregularities empowers a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and avoid many complications which the feet normally encounter.
