Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Doctors put in around 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to general medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes lie within these institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received extensive healthcare education with a stress on problems involving the feet and ankles. They are trained to address difficulties stretching from typical disorders such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical instruction which give them the practical experience necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait irregularities enables a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and protect against many problems which the feet typically encounter.
