Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. They invest approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in reality several podiatry programmes are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received wide-ranging medical education with a stress on concerns regarding the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are qualified to treat conditions stretching from conventional ailments for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more intricate for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have considerable surgical instruction which provide them the prior experience required to execute surgery on those troubles that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it possible for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and minimize the risk of numerous problems which the feet frequently encounter.
