Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend an average of a decade in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and as a matter of fact a number of podiatry training programs are located inside these institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have obtained comprehensive health care training with an importance on problems involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are studied to treat issues stretching from common conditions such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more puzzling such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical training which furnish them the practical experience essential to carry out surgery on those issues that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems makes it possible for a Podiatric doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and prevent a large number of troubles which the feet commonly encounter.
