They spend approximately ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in point of fact many podiatry programs are located inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Doctors have acquired comprehensive health care training with an emphasis on conditions pertaining to the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are educated to treat concerns extending from typical conditions like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical training which supply them the prior experience necessary to perform surgery on those issues that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of many conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
