Dr.’s here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained thorough healthcare training with a focus on problems concerning the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to address complications extending from typical ailments like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical education which give them the experience vital to conduct surgical treatment on those issues that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and protect against countless troubles which the feet normally encounter.
