Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in an average of ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to standard medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes are located within these schools. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have gained wide-ranging healthcare training with a concentration on issues concerning the feet and ankles. They are instructed to care for problems extending from general disorders for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are far more sophisticated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical training which give them the expertise necessary to perform surgery on those complications that are ideally handled through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems facilitates a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and help prevent numerous troubles which the feet usually encounter.
