Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend around 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in point of fact several podiatry programs are located inside these academic institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have obtained encompassing healthcare instruction with a concentration on complications regarding the feet and ankles. They are instructed to treat complications ranging from general disorders such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more complicated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical education which provide them the experience necessary to conduct surgery on those complications that are ideally handled through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait problems empowers a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and prevent numerous complications which the feet commonly encounter.
