Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists spend about 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact numerous podiatry programmes lie inside these academic institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received wide-ranging medical training with an emphasis on problems regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to manage issues extending from usual ailments for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more perplexing including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical education which provide them the experience necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute likewise have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Foot doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of many problems which the feet usually encounter.
