Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend an average of a decade in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to typical medical school and actually many podiatry programs are located within these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have gained thorough medical training with an importance on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to handle difficulties extending from conventional problems for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more complex for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical training which provide them the experience necessary to carry out surgery on those issues that are ideally treated through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait abnormalities facilitates a Podiatric doctor to create shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and prevent many problems which the feet frequently experience.
