Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They devote around a decade in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to traditional medical school and in reality many podiatry programmes are contained inside these academic institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received comprehensive medical instruction with an emphasis on issues pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are taught to address difficulties stretching from conventional disorders for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more challenging including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical instruction which provide them the practical experience vital to perform surgical treatment on those conditions that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of conditions which the feet routinely experience.
