Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in approximately a decade in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in reality quite a number podiatry training programs are located within these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired thorough medical education with a concentration on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are taught to treat complications ranging from general disorders like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more sophisticated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical training which give them the prior experience crucial to carry out surgery on those problems that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and reduce the chances of many problems which the feet regularly encounter.
