Medical doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact various podiatry training programs are located inside these academic institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received extensive medical training with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are instructed to deal with complications varying from familiar afflictions for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more intricate like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical instruction which supply them the prior experience vital to conduct surgery on those troubles that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems enables a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and minimize the risk of many complications which the feet typically encounter.
