Dr.’s here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors devote approximately ten years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in point of fact quite a number podiatry programmes are contained inside these institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received significant medical education with an emphasis on problems concerning the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are instructed to care for complications ranging from normal conditions like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical education which give them the experience essential to execute surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and prevent countless problems which the feet typically encounter.
