Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Doctors invest approximately ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and several podiatry programmes are contained inside these institutions. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Doctors have received extensive medical education with a stress on complications pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are qualified to treat problems varying from conventional problems for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more complex for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical instruction which give them the prior experience needed to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it easy for a Podiatric physician to develop shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and protect against a large number of problems which the feet routinely encounter.
