Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They put in an average of a decade in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and as a matter of fact several podiatry training programs lie within these institutions. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have obtained extensive medical training with a main focus on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are trained to manage complications stretching from typical ailments for instance ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more perplexing such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have thorough surgical education which give them the experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are ideally treated through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it possible for a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of problems which the feet routinely encounter.
