Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Doctors invest about 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles general medical school and in reality several podiatry programmes are located inside these academic institutions. Upon securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained thorough health care instruction with a main focus on issues concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to deal with problems ranging from familiar afflictions like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more perplexing such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical education which give them the experience necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations makes it possible for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of conditions which the feet generally encounter.
