Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend an average of 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and numerous podiatry programmes are contained within these academic institutions. After procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Doctors have acquired extensive medical education with a main focus on concerns pertaining to the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to treat difficulties extending from normal afflictions for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more intricate for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical education which furnish them the practical experience essential to carry out surgery on those conditions that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait problems enables a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and avoid a large number of issues which the feet usually encounter.
