Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend about 10 years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles regular medical school and in point of fact numerous podiatry programmes are located within these academic institutions. Upon getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have obtained wide-ranging healthcare education with an emphasis on conditions involving the feet and ankles. They are trained to treat difficulties stretching from commonplace afflictions for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more complicated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical training which give them the experience necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatric doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and prevent a large number of problems which the feet regularly experience.
