Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists spend about 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in fact a number of podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received comprehensive medical training with a focus on issues regarding the feet and ankles. They are educated to manage complications ranging from general problems such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more sophisticated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have thorough surgical training which provide them the expertise essential to perform surgical treatment on those concerns that are best managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors likewise have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations makes it possible for a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and protect against many issues which the feet routinely experience.
