Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and a number of podiatry training programs are located within these institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received significant medical education with a main focus on concerns regarding the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to handle problems ranging from conventional conditions such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more complicated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have considerable surgical instruction which furnish them the skill needed to perform surgical treatment on those issues that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it easy for a Podiatrist to create footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of many conditions which the feet typically encounter.
