Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. They put in about 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and in point of fact many podiatry training programs are located within these institutions. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.

At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained extensive health care instruction with a main focus on problems regarding the feet and ankles. They are trained to manage conditions ranging from basic ailments for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more complex like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical instruction which furnish them the experience needed to conduct surgical treatment on those conditions that are best remedied through surgical intervention.

Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities makes it easy for a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and protect against many troubles which the feet regularly encounter.
