Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in approximately 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles standard medical school and in point of fact many podiatry programs are contained within these schools. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive medical training with a main focus on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to treat conditions ranging from general problems for instance ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more sophisticated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have thorough surgical instruction which give them the expertise required to perform surgery on those conditions that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors likewise have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities enables a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and prevent many problems which the feet typically encounter.
