Doctors at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend around 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and actually several podiatry programs are located within these academic institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have gained extensive healthcare training with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are educated to treat problems varying from simple conditions for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more perplexing for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have considerable surgical instruction which give them the experience required to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait problems empowers a Foot doctor to create footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against a large number of problems which the feet generally experience.
