Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in an average of a decade in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in reality several podiatry training programs are contained within these academic institutions. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received comprehensive health care training with a stress on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are studied to handle conditions stretching from standard afflictions like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more challenging for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical instruction which give them the prior experience required to carry out surgical treatment on those concerns that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and prevent many problems which the feet frequently encounter.
